American Journal of Managed Care (6/5, Santoro) reports a study found that “the total economic burden of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) is expected to be disproportionately high for minoritized groups, particularly that from unpaid caregiving,” Researchers “conducted a cross-sectional study using nationally representative data to analyze medical and work-related costs for adults 50 years and older with ADRD, as well as their unpaid caregivers.” They found the “total estimated economic burden of ADRD was almost $344 billion in 2020 and was estimated to increase to over $3 trillion in 2060.” Researchers estimated that “unpaid caregiving and forgone wages significantly contribute to the economic burden, with Latino and African American caregivers experiencing substantial financial losses.” The study was published in JAMA Network Open.
