HealthDay (11/4, Reinberg) reports that research suggests “loneliness can take a heavy toll on heart patients – including a higher risk of death in the year after hospitalization.” Investigators found that “compared to people who didn’t feel lonely, those who said they were lonely were nearly three times more likely to be anxious and depressed and have a lower quality of life.” The researchers also found that one year later, “lonely women were nearly three times more likely to die than women who weren’t lonely, and lonely men were more than twice as likely to die.” The findings were published in Heart.
