HealthDay (4/17, Thompson) reports that in a recent study, researchers demonstrated that transcranial magnetic stimulation improved the memory of older adults compared to younger study participants. Researchers noted that prior to the study, older participants “performed worse on memory tasks than a group of young adults with an average age of 25”; but following stimulation, “the seniors tested on par with their younger counterparts, the findings showed.” The findings were published in the journal Neurology. Newsweek (4/17, Georgiou) reports that prior to the stimulation, older adults given a memory task “scored around 40 percent…whereas the young adults managed about 55 percent.” After receiving “five consecutive days of TMS for durations of 20 minutes each session,” older participants given a new memory test “scored similarly to the young adults.” (SOURCE: APA Headlines)
